Become a Certified Teacher of French as a Foreign Language

The DAEFLE (Diplôme d'Aptitude à l’Enseignement du Français Langue Étrangère) is a professional diploma designed for individuals who wish to teach French as a foreign language. The Alliance Française de Houston is an official DAEFLE examination center, and we are proud to host final DAEFLE examination sessions on-site at our center in partnership with the Alliance Française de Paris. Candidates who complete their training will be able to take their final exams locally in Houston in a professional and supportive testing environment.

What is the DAEFLE?

The DAEFLE is a professional diploma that prepares candidates to teach French to non-French speakers in France or abroad. It is an initial or continuing education program delivered remotely, allowing participants to study from anywhere in the world. 

The training program was developed by experts from the Alliance Française de Paris in partnership with the Centre National d’Enseignement à Distance (CNED), ensuring high academic standards and professional relevance. 

The course content focuses on practical classroom teaching skills, combining:

• Theoretical readings
• Document-based activities
• Practical exercises
• Online tutoring and collaborative learning

All materials are available through a dedicated online learning platform. 

Who is the DAEFLE for?

The DAEFLE is designed for:

• Future teachers of French as a Foreign Language (FLE)
• Current teachers seeking professional certification
• Individuals planning to work in education internationally
• French speakers wishing to develop teaching skills

This diploma provides strong preparation for teaching in schools, language centers, or organizations worldwide.

Training Structure

The DAEFLE training program follows three main stages:

1. Online Entrance Test

The first step is to take an online entrance test administered by the Alliance Française de Paris.

This test evaluates:

• Listening comprehension
• Reading comprehension
• Grammar and vocabulary knowledge

Candidates must hold the equivalent of a high school diploma (Level 4 qualification) to register. 

2. Online Training with CNED

After passing the entrance test, candidates enroll in the training program with the Centre National d’Enseignement à Distance (CNED).

Two training formats are available:

Complete Training

• Duration: up to 11 months
• Recommended: at least 8 hours of study per week

Modular Training

• Flexible pacing
• Maximum duration: 3 years

Two training sessions are offered each year:

• July session (ends in May)
• January session (ends in November)

3. Final Examinations

After completing the required modules, candidates must take final written examinations, which are held twice per year:

• June session
• December session

These exams are administered at official partner centers worldwide, including the Alliance Française de Houston. 

To earn the DAEFLE diploma, candidates must successfully validate:

• Six competency blocks, including
• One specialization module

Each validated block results in an official certificate.
