TCF – Frequently Asked Questions

What forms of ID are accepted to register for the TCF exam?

Candidates must present one of the following valid forms of identification:

• A valid driver’s license

• A valid passport

The ID must be current and match the name used during registration.

How long is the test?

The TCF exam includes both written and oral components:

• Written test: approximately 3 hours

• Oral test: approximately 20 minutes.

Will all parts of the TCF exam be taken on a computer?

• All written components of the TCF exam are completed on a computer.

• The oral section is conducted in person with an examiner..

Will the keyboard be in French with accents or in English?

• The keyboard will be in English (QWERTY).

• French accents are available on the screen of the computer.

• The computer is not a touchscreen.

• A mouse can be provided upon request.

In what order are the sections taken?

The exam sections are completed in the following order:

1. Listening Comprehension

2. Reading Comprehension

3. Written Expression

4. Oral Expression

How long does it take to obtain the results?

Results are typically available within 10 to 21 days after the exam date.

How can I prepare for the TCF exam?

Candidates are encouraged to use the TV5MONDE learning platform:

• Visit Apprendre le français avec TV5MONDE

• Look for the TCF preparation section, which includes real-time practice exams similar to the actual test

• Add branding or contact info for Alliance Française de Houston

How will my results be delivered ?

Your TCF results will be delivered by email to the address you provided at the time of registration. Please ensure your email information is accurate and check your inbox (including spam/junk folder) for your official results notification.

Am I allowed to eat or drink once the test has begun?

Eating is not allowed in the testing room once the test has started. You may, however, bring a water bottle with you into the testing room.
